First off, I KNOW the game is set in California, hense the palm trees and the cactus in the desert but I also know alot of people try to make the game look like their hometown, myself included. All the cop car skins from different cities, the uniforms, everything.

For me personally, being from Montréal, all the cars, uniforms, flags, billboards and even the road signs have been modified in my game to reflect that area and subscribers on my youtube channel appreciate the effort I put into all that, but one thing always makes it seem out of context: the trees.

A couple of mods have come out recently adding redwoods and more trees around Harmony, I was wondering if there was any way to replace the palm trees and the cactus with something else to make it look more "northern-ish".

I found the vegetation files in x64i, but would it only be a matter of renaming those files? Like, copy the tree files in the Palm Tree folder and remane it with the palm tree names to make the game think it's a palm tree? 

Has anyone tried this out?

Sorry, just messing around.  I so far have not seen any mods that replace the palm trees with some kind of other tree.  There are plenty that put more palm trees around, but that's clearly not what you're looking for.  However, you can try the workaround you put above, just make a backup of the palm tree folder and make the changes you outlined.  If it doesn't work, simply put the backup copy back in.  Another option to try, make all the palm tree textures transparent images... don't know if this would work, but even if it does, you might find yourself running into "ghost trees" while roaming around.

welp... it sortof worked, but now I can't get the textures to work properly... It's not as simple as the cars to associate X texture with X tree and Y textures with Y tree... Now the textures keep keep flickering depending on the angle you look at them, lol.

 

got it working :D makes it look so much more... Canadian :D replaced every palm tree with Maple trees

Seems there is only a couple of trees that it works with, so you have to go by trial and error, I just copied the tree you want in the palmtree folders, delete the actual palm trees and rename the tree you want instead with the name of the palmtree file you just deleted.
I know maple tree works, I saw a couple of others that worked too but I forget wich ones now... and the ones that don't work will do like the above screenshots and the textures glitch out.
