question to distinguish the georgia state police

Featured Replies

hello, I have a question where I can not get away because of missing cover, I wanted to know what the difference between the georgia state patrol (state trooper) and the officers of the georgia department of public safety (state officer) or MCCD called me and I do not knows what the abbreviation means, because no logical translation.
Would be nice if someone can help me

Hello

From what I remember... Georgia DPS is a state agency responsible for law enforcement in the state, and Georgia State Patrol is its division. Georgia DPS has some other subdivisions, one of which is commercial vehicle enforcement if my memory serves me right. I'm not really sure about the State Officer title though, as to my knowledge all law enforcement officers of DPS are titled State Troopers.

Arizona has a similar system with the AZ DPS having Arizona Highway Patrol, CID, Commercial Enforcement and more specialized divisions, and Texas, with Texas HP and Texas Rangers being specialized subdivisions of the Texas DPS (and many other states).

The MCCD is the Motor Carrier Compliance Division.

The GSP is a part of the DPS. The MCCD is a own agency in the DPS and the state officer working for the MCCD have nothing to do with the state patrol.

Also, the DPS is the department that has to keep the state capitol and the area around it safe.

Georgia Department of Public safety has three departments under them:

Georgia State Patrol

Motor Carrier Compliance Division

Capitol Police

GSP they are troopers. MCCD and Capitol police are Officers, but all three have state wide jurisdiction.

GSP mostly handles the interstates , but in some of the smaller counties they answer calls, conduct traffic stops, handle accidents, handle officer involved accidents, and traffic fatalities.

MCCD handles the trucks, weight stations etc. They have state wide jurisdiction. They can also pull over regular vehicles as well

Capitol Police some of the senior guys handle security at the capitol along with the GSP recruits. The other Capitol police officers handle the little calls around the capitol, and lots of traffic enforcement. They also have state wide jurisdiction.

The Chief of GSP is ultimately GSP, MCCD, and Capitol Police's Boss / Chief. He controls all divisions.

Thank you for all your answers, now I have a good picture of what the differences and tasks of the units are!
For me as a German, the American criminal justice system is a huge mess, so many units and organizations on city, country and federal and many also overlap in their jurisdiction. In germany, we have far fewer different organizations and the responsibilities are clearly regulated. we have in uniform on stiff also only the police, from the respective state, which differs from the uniform and vehicle design only minimally from the other federal states, they are responsible everywhere in the country and in the city, in america there are metropolitan police because Several counties often joined forces.
In germany / europe, for example, there is no sheriff or uniformed state police or so many federal units with so many different uniform / car designs.
