AKs and American Police

Featured Replies

I was browsing around on the internet, and I found this interesting gem. Apparently, police officers belonging to the North Slope Borough of Alaska are actually using semi-automatic  AK rifles as a patrol rifle.  They prefer these rifles over the AR series because of the AK's sturdiness in extremely cold climates. They also prefer these rifles because the 7.62 rounds take down larger animals faster than the AR's 5.56 rounds.

Thoughts? Keep in mind that the first  article is from early 2016, so it might be outdated.

I personally don't see the relevance in the type of rifle in conjunction with the duties of law enforcement.

I can understand where you are coming from, but  I primarily shared this because most people don't know about this.

Our local SO here uses the G36 and UMP45s... Uni PD use P90s.. It all depends on the area. The University here is close quarters, so handling a shooter with a smaller rifle is more practical imo. I think most agencies use the AR for contract ($$) purposes and the paramilitary relevance in law enforcement.

Everything needs more lights.

For  the G36 and UMP45s, are they used by the Sheriff SWAT teams or are they actually used as patrol weapons?
