A far as I know Zmodler is the only 3d program to support the GTA file type. So trying to use an alternative wouldn't work well because you would have to use Zmod at some point to be able to export it as the GTA V file type.

Edit: I believe the program R* used might also work but I have no idea what this is

I know the team behind OpenIV is working on the openFormats conversion so you can edit using the GIMS plugin for 3ds max, but thus far they've only just recently released OpenFormat conversions which is still limited in what it can do. It may take another few months for them to get It working well with vehicle files.

You can check out OpenIV's website for more details it's in their most recent updates.
