Linus Tech Tips - Any users change passwords

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I saw that some of you lads over here at LCPDFR.com are into PC building stuff, and you might have an account at LinusTechTips.com. I know this is pretty unrelated, however as a step of caution I advise people with account there to change their passwords as soon as possible.

"Recently we have become aware of a serious security breach on the Linus Tech Tips forums. The following information is very important to ensure the privacy and integrity of your account.

On September 23, 2015 we became aware of an attack that injected malicious code into the forum's template engine that caused some users to experience a warning indicating a malicious site was ahead in some browsers. We were alerted to this incident by way of one of our new Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS). Unfortunately, after exploring the issue further we realized that the attack was initially performed on August 11, 2015 and had been dormant on our servers since then.

This attack enabled the malicious party to intervene in the login process of our forum after a successful login was performed, more commonly known as a man-in-the-middle attack. The attacker was able to capture the incoming password and username of each user that logged in successfully.

We recommend that anyone who has logged into the forum over the past 3-5 months reset their passwords on any other website that you may share the same password as Linus Tech Tips.

I understand that passwords are encrypted but a lot of them were cracked that day. Sorry to paste so,ething from another site, but you know, better safe than sorry.

Don't take it as a killer, all you need is a simple password change to be on the safe side. But if you didn't log in then, it isn't really mandatory.
