Colorado State Trooper was shot on I-70

Featured Replies

About week ago I found some information about two Colorado State Troopers who had taken part in shooting on I-70.

One of them was very seriously injured and is in a serious condition. The second one wasn't injured.

Due to the fact I have found nothing here about it so far, I decided to write about that incident.

To find more information about it, please like and track official profile of Colorado State Patrol on facebook - https://www.facebook.com/ColoradoStatePatrol?fref=ts .

"Trooper Shot on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon

Today, May 8, 2014 shortly after 9:00 AM, Colorado State Patrol Troopers stopped to assist a motorist on Interstate 70 at milepost 129. During the contact, a trooper was shot. The trooper was transported to Valley View Hospital, in Glenwood Springs, with serious injuries.

Trooper Eugene Hofacker, 6-year veteran of the Colorado State Patrol was hired in January of 2008, and assigned to the Vail Troop Office. Trooper Hofacker is currently in critical, but stable condition.

Colonel Scott Hernandez, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol, addressed the media today stating: "There is nothing routine about traffic contacts, including motorist assists. Our troopers assist motorists every day as part of our patrolling activities. All traffic contacts pose inherent risk to law enforcement on a daily basis."

Also from Chief Hernandez, "today our troopers acted in a heroic and professional fashion and on behalf of the men and women of Colorado State Patrol we would like to express our appreciation for the outpouring of community support that we have already received. We respectfully request that you keep Trooper Hofacker and his family in your thoughts and prayers."

On the eve of National Police Week, which commemorates our fallen officers across the nation, this is a solemn reminder of the risks our troopers and other law enforcement officers are placed in every single day.

Questions pertaining to the the investigation should be directed to the Garfield County Sheriff's Office.

Westbound I-70 remains closed at this time. Please visit cotrip.org or follow @ColoradoDOT on twitter for road closure and detour information."

Just an update on this story..Today we found out that the Trooper who shot the suspect was justified (as if there was any question about it) as he was only acting in self defense for himself as well as protecting the other Troopers on scene. The Trooper who was shot by the suspect is doing well and is back patrolling on regular duty.

It's nice to see that the Trooper that fired at and killed the suspect did not hesitate at all, but instead just acted swiftly to protect the Troopers around him.
