GUIDE: How to revert game version without backing up files. (STEAM only)

Featured Replies

If any mods see this please pin this post so more people can see it and fix their game.

This post does NOT include downloading any files except directly from steam through the steam app.

Open a folder: press control+r and press control+v to paste in the folder path

Copy something: press control+c

Part 1 (Find the game version):

I dont have a list of the game versions but refrence the update version and date here to the update date on SteamDB

(eg. 1.67 SA Mercinaries = June 13 2023 = Manifest ID 4766070436860215426)

Part 2 (GTAV.exe and related)

  • Go to https://steamdb.info/depot/271591/manifests/
  • Find the game version you want to download and the manifest ID of it
  • Enter steam://open/console in your browser
  • Enter this into your steam console: download_depot 271590 271591 [MANIFEST ID]
  • Once downloaded, open this folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_271590\depot_271591"
  • Keep the following files and delete everything else:
    • GTAV.exe
    • GTAVLanguageSelect.exe
    • GTAVLauncher.exe
    • PlayGTAV.exe
    • steam_api64.dll

I would strongly recommend making a backup of these files somewhere so you wont have to redownload everything again.

Part 2 (update.rpf and update2.rpf)

  • Go to https://steamdb.info/depot/271594/manifests/
  • Find the game version you want to download
  • Enter this into your steam console: download_depot 271590 271594 [MANIFEST ID]
  • Open this folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_271590\depot_271591\update"
  • Refresh the folder every minute or so (right click -> show more options -> refresh or right click -> refresh)
  • Once you see the x64 folder appear exit steam by pressing the steam icon on the top left of the window and press exit.
    • This is so that steam doesnt waste your time by redownloading the x64 folder when it isin't needed
  • Wait for a few seconds then delete the x64 folder. If it says folder in use wait then try again

I would strongly recommend making a backup of these files somewhere so you wont have to redownload everything again.

Part 3 (copying files to directory)

  • Open this folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V"
  • Open this folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_271590\depot_271594"
  • Click on the update folder once
  • Press control+x
  • Click on the other window that you just opened (should be the game folder) and press control+v
  • If it asks to confirm folder replacement press YES
  • If it says "the destination has 2 files of the same name" press "replace the files in the destination"
  • Close the empty folder (the folder you just moved files from)
  • Open this folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_271590\depot_271591"
  • Click on any of the files once
  • Press control+a
  • Press control+x
  • Click on the other window that you have open (should be the game folder) and press control+v
  • If it says "the destination has 2 files of the same name" press "replace the files in the destination"
  • Now your game files should be reverted.

I would strongly recommend making a backup of these files somewhere so you wont have to redownload everything again.

Part 4 (optional cleanup)

  • Open this folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps"
  • Right click on the content folder (click with 2 fingers on trackpad)
  • Press the delete button (the trash can)

I would strongly recommend making a backup of these files somewhere so you wont have to redownload everything again.

Tried to make this guide as idiot proof as I possibly can, if theres anything else put it in the comments and i'll reply. Hope this helped

I appreciate the full details of this post.   Would it not be easier to just be prepared for an inevitable update that occurs about 2-3 times per year by already backing up your files?  I have been doing that for the past several years now.  However, I can see the benefit of your post here though, as no matter how hard I try to warn people of the update and show people how to be prepared for the update, they never do it.   😆
