Help Needed...Very New

Featured Replies

I am 100% new to modding and 100% new to computer gaming. I need assistance. I've never even owned a computer. Used them, sure. But still pretty computer dumb.

I downloaded a bunch of cool mods and now have no clue what to do and I have a million questions. I could use a mentor!

Hey @GamerChipmunk

This particular channel is more aimed at the people that write mods, so you may not get much help here.

There are some "community support" channels in the forums that may have more traffic and people to help.

Some of bits of advice from me, and I am not an expert - far from it I have had 3 years of trial and error:

- Get a clean install of GTA 5 first, and make a copy. Keep that copy somewhere save as you can use it to roll back if there is an issue without waiting hours to re-download.

      - I make copies of the GTA 5 folder at key points in installs e.g:

           - After getting Rage Plugin Hook and Scripthook working

           - After getting LSPDFR working

           - After my various mods are working (as the working stable copy)

           - Before doing any major updates to installed mods (nothing worse than destroying a working copy of the game with an update)

Assuming you have the disk space, this may be overkill but makes it easy to get back to a point if there is an issue. I then delete old ones to free up space.

I have separate installs for clean GTA, for LSPDFR, and a testing install to test mods without breaking my own game.

Mods usually need Rage Plugin Hook (RPH) or Scripthook (and Scripthook.net) - the mod description or install instructions should guide you there on what is needed.

Accept things will break and some mods may not work well with other mods. You may have some trial and error to get things right.

More mods installed (and more intensive mods) = less FPS and more lag.

The playing around and modding can be as fun as the game itself (or just frustrating) depending on how things go. Sometimes you may just need to step back and try that thing that is not working another day or after another update.

Finally do reach out with specific issues - search the forums and if someone has seen it before they may save you hours of time trying to fix something. However, if nobody can help, you may not get a response which means some of your questions may be left unanswered. If you find an answer yourself, it is always worth answering your own post - so if someone has the same problem it may help them too.

There are a load of youtube vids that will also help. I recommend the tutorials by Albo1125 and BenzoEffect as well as GMAntonZ

Hope this has helped a little. Good luck on your journey.

That really super does help, thank you but its going to be a long journey LOL since I don't even know how to copy the GTAV file. I have zero knowledge of how to do any of this. I did like your saving copies idea. It's like check points in a game so if you die you don't have to go waaay far back. I'll have to check out the community support forum too I guess. I thought this was it LOL. Oof.

Thanks

Hi

Lets start then with getting you a backup. Are you using the Steam version of GTA 5 or the Epic Games version?

You are looking for the install folder which will be called "Grand Theft Auto 5". In steam, it is located in your steam library /steamapps/common folder

Copy this folder somewhere else as your clean backup (I have a copy called "Grand Theft Auto 5 - Vanilla" or you can create a zip file of the folder by right clicking and "send to Zip".

Once you have done that you have a backup you can use to delete the old folder and start again if it gets messed up.
