Controller causing random hard crashes?

I use a Thrustmaster GPX Xbox 360 controller for games such as GTA.  Never had issues with any other game except GTA.  For whatever reason, the game will hard crash randomly.  I can go a full session sometimes without issue, while the very next time I play it crashes.  There's nothing in the log about the crash.

 

I tested playing an hour with KB/Mouse, no random hard crashes.  How could the controller be causing it?
