Updating My System - GPU Specific

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I have been out of the gaming scene for a while now, but with the release of GTA 5 and my recent discovery of LCPDFR I have decided to update my system.  Here is what I currently have:

CPU:  AMD Phantom 2.4GHZ Quadcore Black Edition

RAM:  4GB (I plan to add another 4GB)

GPU:  Sapphire Radeon 3870 512MB

Now, my system can play GTA 4 just fine.  It can even play LCPDFR, but if I add any other mod (ELS, icEnhancer 3.0, etc.) my system (Im assuming it is my graphics card) cant handle it and it crashes.

My simple and rather inexpensive plan is to add more RAM and update my graphics card.  Currently I have my eye on the MSI Radeon R9 280 - 3GB.  I know this will run GTA 4 perfectly, but I dont know how it will stack up to GTA 5 AND all of the mods that are being developed for it.  Can anyone tell me if this is a reasonable upgrade, or if I am missing something?

Thanks.

Phantom? you mean phenom lol? Are you sure your power supply is up to scratch? Is the brand reputable? the 3870 uses 106 W while a r9 280 uses 250W. If its a prebuilt Hp or dell power supply, I would upgrade. Do you have a small case? my r9 280 is huge, (275 mm) and I had to get creative with the wires. If wattage is a issue, look at the nvidia gtx 960 (lower wattage, lower performance)

Hi Propel,

Thanks for the response.  My current power supply is an Antec 450W true power.  Also, my case is very large and has a lot of breathing room.  I know that I will need to upgrade my power supply when I upgrade my video card, but I dont think the power supply is why the game is crashing.  I think the 3870 cant handle the mods.  Am I right?
