Oculus Rift

Sup guys, with some money drawn in from christmas & the money I've gotten from working I've been considering getting the oculus rift. I know it still isn't optimized for many games but I often see it used in different games by way of modding & such. I guess what I'm getting at is, is it worth the money? It seems like an amazingly immersive way to play games but is it more trouble than its worth to attempt to play it on games it's not yet optimized for (ex. battlefield 4, gta iv first person mod, flight sim x, possibly gta v etc.). And if it does work pretty good, is it difficult to modify game files to be able to use the rift & are those modifications irreversible, meaning the game cannot be played normally again?

I read up on a few articles but I figure I'd poke around to see if anyone has more experience with it or things like it
