3Ds Max Modeling Help

As the title suggests, I'm looking for some help with 3Ds Max. I just downloaded it because I saw a thread about you it is a free 3-year license if you're a student. 

Anyways, I was wanting to know if any of you guys here have a decent knowledge of the software and are willing to either help me out via PM every now and then with different things. Or if you had a great tutorial on how the basics of 3Ds Max work. I am mainly looking to take some unlocked models and kind of customize them to my own personal liking. But my first issue is what file format does 3Ds use, and how do I import cars into it to edit them? I am completely new to this whole software, the only 3D modeling software I have ever used is Inventor, so any help is greatly appreciated. 

I have looked through the forums and really haven't found anything about 3Ds Max help, mainly Zmod, so if there is something relevant to my post out there, please feel free to link it to me. Also, I'm sorry if this is the wrong place for this.
