New Mexico State Police Chase

Featured Replies

This video is a few months old but still wanted to share it with the community and see what others think related to this incident.

Small summary:

A woman got pulled over for speeding, she couldn't decide if she wanted to pay the ticket or go to court, she then takes off and pulls over again less than a minute later, the officer tries to pull her out and arrest her for evading however she resists before finally getting out. Later she then runs back to her vehicle, the officer tries to pull her out again, her son attempts to push the officer away from her then both of them jump back in the minivan. The officer tries to smash the window of the minivan when she locks the doors, and 2 other officers arrive on scene just as she takes off, where one of the officers ends up shooting at the minivan.

I suggest watching the video: (or at least most of it)

Later in a news article, she explains "why she ran from cops" and apparently it was for the "safety of her children".

The mother was charged for intentional abuse of a child and aggravated fleeing of a law enforcement officer. She is also facing a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. Her son was charged for battery and resisting arrest.

Just want to see what others think relating to this situation, and who is in the right and wrong.

I can definitely agree that it was not necessary to shoot at the van with children inside.

The officers arriving on the scene did not know that there were children in the vehicle, they arrived to see an officer being assualted and the vehicle fleeing again. The vehicle had fled twice already, they didn't know why.

I think because I'm British I feel differently about using firearms in law enforcment but, yes I feel the use of weapons was not needed however I do not know how it felt being there so I cannot really make a judgement that reflects the scene itself.

I just don't know why that floowing officer gets the car keys of the driver in the first place and made the driver to step out an site near he car. the troopers may have done a good job., doing there job working under the rules of the law

I believe that the state troopers was in the right. The state trooper gave the woman multiple warnings, but yet and still she resisted and gave the officer a hard time.

The woman's son had no right to step out of the vehicle and try to attack the officer. I don't see how the woman was protecting her children by running from the police, she was driving recklessly at moderately high speeds.

She could have ran head on to someone and caused something that could have easily been avoided!

As for the officer shooting at the vehicle, I don't think it was necessary, even though he was aiming at the tires, there were kids in the car.

If the woman would have just taken the ticket, all of this could have been avoided!

I agree that the shooting wasn't necessary. But the law enforcement officers did everything right according to the law. I still wonder why the officer didn't force the woman to give him the keys of the car (would have at least avoided the take off). So in my opinion everything was justified except of the shooting.
