Editing Handling.dat Crashes Game

Featured Replies

Okay, so here's my situation. GTA IV ran absolutely fine for the past 6 months, but it was taking way too much space on my SSD so I moved it to my hard drive. I did it through Steam which meant I had to reinstall all my mods. I put everything in (cars, ELS, weapons, scripts, etc) and the game ran fine. When I edited the handling.dat file, my game no longer worked. It got through all the character screens but right where the black loading screen should start it closes to my desktop with no error message. I've verified that my game is 1.0.7.0 which means I shouldn't need a new filelist.pak, but I tried putting in a new one anyway. That did nothing. I have no idea what to do, especially since I was able to edit the handling just fine when it was on the SSD. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Are you replacing the handling.dat or just editing lines in it? If you're just editing it, can you state what you're editing? Also, are you running original or TBOGT, and which were you running before?

I'm just replacing lines with Sgt Kanyo's handling lines. I'm editing police, police2, polpatriot, fbi, and noose. I'm running the original, which is the same as I had before.

EDIT: FIXED. Apparently it was a formatting error, because when I verified my game cache and tried again it worked. I think what happened was that I was adding a line break after each handling line to make it look like the default ones. I figured that the file wouldn't like having handling lines for two cars butted up against each other, but I guess it prefers that.
