Whilst I cannot get into every detail, the old trending algorithm gave a huge boost to updated files, and penalised files uploaded long ago.

The new algorithm tracks momentum, how much has the download pattern shifted, and for new files - the boost they can possibly receive has a momentum cap. This allows older files to trend, whilst also highlighting newer files breaking the mold.
