Could this be why my game crashes?

I have a very unfriendly pc when it comes to IV, but I think I know why it isn't working. Could it be that my poor video card is running out of memory to give the game, so it taps into the RAM for help, then my RAM runs out of memory to give it, so my game ends up crashing? That is what I have concluded from my research.

That to me is very valid. Especially because your system is currently using ram to run other programs in the background also. You are going to want to update the graphics card and ram for the most part. Also using any mods can contribute to this event also!

That's what I thought. It won't even play good vanilla, it gives me an extra 2 minutes. I found a nice motherboard for a good price, and the i3. I might be renovating a little more.

So I can only repeat what midnight said.You need more RAM and maybe a better GPU also a modern HDD or SSD would help to get more FPS and run GTA4 stable

If you have more than 1 HDD slot then go for it, for example I have 4 HDD slots, but they are bigger HDD, 1 TB each. So add more to the slots you have free or replace the HDD with something bigger.

If your going to get a better gpu or hdd, save your money and build or buy a newer pc. Preferably having your cpu be a dual core. The minimum specs:

When running this game trust me, you want more then minimium requirements, especially if your going to mod it heavily, get a custom build PC cause you can buy an already built PC that's a piece of scrap metal and pay the same price for part's AND know whats in your computer without having a salesman that has no idea what they are talking about helping you and you buy a lemon :P yes, i have had past expereinces like this..

Excellent. My custom built pc is almost 3 weeks old. Cost was roughly $1100 over the course of no insterest for 1 yr for the newegg and 18 months for the best buy credit cards (if you have access to any). I have an amd fx-6100 (6 core) 3.33ghz, 2 xfx amd radeon hd 7770 1GB pci-e x16 3.0 graphics cards in crossfirex mode, 2 amd entertainment ddr3 1333mhz ram, 1 60GB SSD main drive for OS and updates, 1 320GB 2nd hdd for installed games, ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ AMD 970 motherboard, COUGAR Solution Black Steel ATX Mid Tower & Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit OS.

When you get near to running out of ram, the system will use the page file. At that point, it will write the RAM to the hard drive instead.

Windows will then page sections of memory in and out of the RAM/pagefile.

If at any point your hard drive is full (not able to use the pagefile), and your RAM starts filling up, windows will pop up and tell you exactly that.

Your computer is fairly old, the specs are fairly low... If you upgrade to a more current system it will clear up most of your problems.

All in all.... if you ran out of ram you would get a different error. The game would never attempt to write to ram that doesn't exist, that's in the nature of how it was programmed. Your problem lies in that 1. you need to run as admin, 2. your ram is corrupt, or 3. there is something wrong with the game, and it's not compatible with your system setup (which is unlikely).

Your pagefile may also be stored on a corrupt portion of hard drive. Try disk defragment and see if that clears up the problem.

Furthermore, the RAGE engine directly interfaces with the ram, on a system level (system and assembly code), unlike other engines that interface with the ram through windows. GTA:IV was the first game that really pushed RAGE to it's limits, and therefore there are lots of issues with the engine --- as we all know (performance related, etc.)...

Also...

Without the pagefile, on 2gb of ram the game would never get past the loading screen. Once you are in game, around 2gb of ram is being used solely by IV (on top of that you have windows... that's .25gb / .5gb depending on your version). additionally, a minimum of 250mb will be used on your video card.

Dude! You just doubled my IQ! Well. I'm already for sure I'm getting a new pc. But about the defrag thing. I normally defrag one or twice a week. So that isn't the problem. I know that this pc isn't strait from dell. It was preowned, and wiped out before given to me. So there could just about be ANYTHING wrong with it. Thanks for the help though.
