About This File

After a month of development, Custom Backup is finally here!

Custom backup gives you a new level of control in LSPDFR. The key feature of this mod is regionally customized backup, allowing you to set a different response for any area on the map. For any named area of the game (like "Rockford Hills", "Los Santos International Airport", "Sandy Shores", etc.) you can completely customize every level of response just like the built-in backup.xml. The syntax of the CustomBackup.xml file is very similar to the built-in backup.xml, but has numerous additions to increase your control over the game:

  • Set a chance for anything! Peds, vehicles, and vehiclesets now all take a chance attribute which controls how likely they are to be chosen. (The built-in backup.xml only lets you set a chance on peds.)
  • Configure vehicle extras, liveries, and colors! You can now set any color you want for any response vehicle, opening up a whole new level of customization for unmarked units. Vehicle extra configuration also works reliably, whereas it seems to have some issues in the built-in backup.xml.
  • Cop weapon selection! Set a list of weapons to give your backup units, set the probability for each weapon, and decide whether you want them to pick one at random or always get the most powerful one.
  • Set spawn distance range for each vehicle entry! Every vehicle entry can have a minimum and maximum spawn distance set. This allows for additional realism by making certain units spawn closer or further away. NOOSE SWAT probably isn't just hanging out around the corner, so make them drive in from a mile away. On top of Mt. Chiliad your backup will probably be coming from a long distance, but in Downtown there's probably local patrol units very near by. Your imagination is the limit for leveraging these settings.
  • Code 2 response with lights! Let's be honest, how often do cops really respond "code 2" with no lights? You can now configure your Code 2 units to respond with lights (but no siren), or to respond with their lights off but turn them on once they arrive and park on scene. YouTube video demo.
  • Integration with Better EMS: Download and install Better EMS, and you can call for an advanced EMS response through the Custom Backup menu.
  • Integration with Police Smart Radio: Call for backup from your radio! Call Code 2 or Code 3 local backup, or Pursuit and Air Support units.

Installation instructions are included in the download. Basic installation is pretty easy; just make sure to choose a CustomBackup.xml file to use and put it in place. Advanced usage of the CustomBackup.xml file is explained in great detail in the documentation PDF.

INSTRUCTIONS TO OVERRIDE DEFAULT LSPDFR BACKUP MENU:

To completely disable the built-in LSPDFR backup menu and use the custom menu instead, follow these instructions.

  • Edit CustomBackupLocations.ini. Set these settings:
    • CustomBackupMenuKey=B
    • CustomBackupModifier=None
    • OverrideLSPDFRBackup=false
  • Go to the GTA V settings menu
  • Under Keybindings, go to GTA Online section
  • Change "Look At" from B to something you don't use, like the numpad period

Thank you to @vladimir850 for figuring this out!

Nicely done. A great modification with great control and great functionality. A big plus is that it is very easy to edit once you know what you are doing.

I have been using Custom Backup (3.3) for over a day now. I found it perfect for my needs. I am creating a entirely custom police department as in skins done by myself. With the help of this script I am able to set certain spawn locations for each vehicle/livery/etc and even customize them including modded wheels and components. This mod is perfect and fairly simple to use. It however does take some getting use to.

I found one thing the problem, I personally would like to remove all the default backup requests due to the fact that they can't be customized from what I can find. If anyone knows how to I'd be more than happy to remove this from my review.

What do you mean by default backup requests can't be customized? You can create backup entries for any of the "default" backups. If you're having issues figuring out what to put in the XML to achieve what you're trying to do, please feel free to ask in the comments here.

Brilliant mod! I found it was a bit glitchy when I press 'B' for the backup menu, it seems to flicker every time, but then again that may be something in my settings? Anyone else?

Author response

The glitchy behavior when you press B is unfortunately "by design". LSPDFR allows no way to change the keybindings or disable the default backup menu. Therefore, in order to override the default menu, here is what happens when you press B:

  • LSPDFR registers the keystroke and opens the default backup menu
  • The plugin registers the keystroke. It sends the "N" key to the game, causing it to open the LSPDFR interaction menu. When you open the interaction menu, that causes the backup menu to close.
  • The plugin sends "N" again, causing the interaction menu to close.
  • The plugin then shows the custom menu.

Until LSPDFR offers a way to change the keybindings in their INI file, this is the only way I can have the custom menu registered to the same key as the default menu. If you don't like the glitchiness of this workaround, you can open the INI file for the plugin and disable it, then reassign the backup menu to a different key. There's details on the INI file options in the PDF documentation included with the download.

I've only just decided to try out this plugin and boy do I wish I'd tried it sooner. The customisation is just fantastic. From being able to set semi-realistic spawn distances to choosing the peds that respond, it's simply a must-have plugin for LSPDFR!

Really needs a friendly Interface program for people who don't understand how to code especially to this detail, otherwise it's a good script.

Don't know why it has taken me more than a year to actually try this mod out.  Now, I could never play LSPDFR without it.  Easily one of my top 3 mods.  Period.

This mod gives my life meaning XD, but seriously I have been waiting for this mod since the second I saw LCPDFR. It works great and its very easy to manage if you are half decent with XML files.

I like this plugin but only the .xml thingy is a little bit difficult.
But I use the build in XML and it is nice!

Glad you like the mod! If you're having trouble understanding the XML file, check out the documentation PDF included in the download. If you still can't get it to do what you want, comment on the forum thread and post your custombackup.XML file and what you're trying to do.
